Local law firm, Shatz, Schwartz and Fentin, P.C., serving Massachusetts, Connecticut and New York, today announced that Attorney L. Alexandra Hogan served as a volunteer at the M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program at Holyoke High School on March 18. Attorney Hogan’s presentation included information on how to use and understand credit.

The M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program helps high school students throughout the Commonwealth to learn how to make informed and effective decisions regarding their finances through educational and experiential opportunities. The M. Ellen Carpenter Financial Literacy Program has partnered with the United States Bankruptcy Court of the District of Massachusetts, the Hampden County Bar Association and the Hampshire County Bar Association. The literacy program, along with 600 volunteers, has reached over 4,500 students statewide since 2005. Additionally, the program is supported in part by the Boston Bar Foundation.

The program consists of three classroom modules, along with a mock trial presentation in the United States Bankruptcy Court. Topics covered during the presentation include personal finance and budgeting, using credit and credit cards, buying a car and the consequences of poor financial management.

“I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to volunteer my time for the financial literacy program,” said Attorney Hogan. “The students were very engaged and asked thoughtful questions. I hope that we have made a positive impression that the students will remember long into the future when considering the pros and cons of credit.”
